Getting ranked highly in Google’s search engine results pages is something that thousands of webmasters dream of and many strive hard to achieves. Yet, Google has devastated many hardworking webmaster through their many algorithm updates that they claim are meant to improve user experience.
The result is that many websites have fallen down through the ranks of their target keyword search results listing by several pages and there are other webmasters who can no longer find their website listed on Google at all. It is definitely time to stop and ask just what Google’s motives are really all about.
Building backlinks to a website used to be a good activity. This work was done not only by the people that owned the website but by any averagevisitor who wanted to share a great that they found with others. Now thanks to Google’s algorithm updates a thing called ‘negative link building’ has appeared. As if webmasters did not already have enough problems to worry about, now there is yet another way for their competition to under mind them.
Any website can be a victim of negative link building. There are certain types of links that make a website go down in the search results listing. Some webmasters who have trouble outdoing the completion push themselves ahead of the game by blasting their competitor’s sites with the links that Google hates to rank. There are even services people buy that provide negative link building to any website that they name which causes the site to fall out of the SERPs.
While the claim is that their efforts were focused on improving search results for search engine users, it seems that Google has opened up a Pandora’s Box. While there have always been black hat techniques, scams, and shady dealings on the internet, the emerge of negative link building has caused and all-out war amongst webmasters. Some are going blow for blow through a mad cycle of link bombing attach. All are trying to beat it out with one another for that ever coveted first page.
The biggest problem is that good, honest webmasters have a complete lack of control over how their websites perform. It used to be that getting a website to rank was all about providing high quality description, making a site user-friendly, and generating quality backlinks, but now even those efforts can come to nothing if a competitor targets the site for negative link building, which is something that just about anyone can do.
All those algorithm updates did not do much to improve Google’s search results for the search engine’s users. There are still some pretty ridiculous results that appear now and then and really information is often disastrously hard to find. This is because even quality site can be hidden, thanks to the ease by which they are bombed. Some webmasters have gone to ridiculous efforts to try and recover, such as sending out emails to the owners of every site where they have a backlink and requesting a removal.
Just why would Google make all this drama happen? There does not seem to be any benefit to either webmasters or Google users. However, making websites more dependent on them for traffic is in Google’s best interest. Otherwise traffic could just flow from site to site without ever having to first go through Google It seems that this internet superpower is just sinking its hook in deeper.
